Aloha Organic · Niu field guide

Look-alikes deserve a second look.

Use several features together, and keep uncertainty visible when recording a possible sighting.

Comparison specimens: CRB larva second from the top, with smaller oriental flower beetle larvae
CRB is the second larva from the top. The other, smaller specimens are oriental flower beetle larvae. HDOA display, Honolulu, Oʻahu; September 13, 2017. Forest and Kim Starr · Photograph source · CC BY 2.0 · Unmodified.

Compare more
than size.

Oriental flower beetles and some dung beetles can be confused with CRB. Larvae are especially easy to mix up. Young CRB are small, so size alone is not a reliable exclusion.

Photograph the underside and record a short video of movement. CRB larvae typically move on their side; a C shape alone does not confirm the species.

Keep the useful details.

  • Top, side, and underside views.
  • The material where it was found.
